Also: They Egyptian is back and there is a screening of ‘2001’ in 70mm: link: 11/21
Happy almost November —
Check the link to this in a week or so in the event I add some more screenings. I gave Isidor ZERO heads up I was putting this out tonight, but wanted to as there are a LOT of goings on by this newsletter’s standard and some are quickly approaching.
First and foremost is ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ in 3D at the Aero theater on Halloween (Tuesday the 31st) at 7:30pm.
‘Creature’ stars Julie Adams happens to be the mother of Mitch Danton. And if you have taken any of my classes in the last few years, it is very likely Mitch brought an impressive panel of editors to speak as part of his ‘Cutting it in Hollywood’ Panel. Mitch hosted a panel on Tuesday and had the audacity to invite my students to attend this irresistible screening during their class time next week. Feel free to join those who have been excused for this cool occasion (first time Mitch will be at a screening since his mom passed on a few years back) and he will be “chilling out” in the back if you want to say “hi”.
LET THE COLLABORATION BEGIN:
We have a few folks reaching out in the hunt for editors and other collaborators for their projects this month.
In order of receipt:
First out of the gate looking for an editor is Sergio Serrano Castillo who writes:
- This is a project for credit. All the crew are from UCLA Extension and we are starting with our first projects and, because of the Micro-Budget nature of it, is not paid.
- We need someone who has experience in editing, color grading, and sound and wants to add this project to his/her portfolio. It will sent to Film Festivals and uploaded on IMDb.
- The estimated length of the final film is around 25 to 30 minutes (the script is 28 pages long).
- The deadline to get it finished would be around February 2024.
I would really appreciate it if you could communicate this to your students. If anyone is interested, can reach me at this same email: sergioserranocastillo.web@gmail.com
Thank you and I am looking forward to hearing from you,
Sergio Serrano Castillo
Thank you, Sergio! Very much looking forward to how this unfold and getting to share the result of this impressive feat here.
Speaking of ongoing impressive feats, Kevin Breisch has an update on his FEATURE FILM.
"Hello! Here is a work in progress cut of our film, Modern Rockers. The past year has seen a lot of reshoots and a redux of the edit. The black screen at the beginning is a list of what still needs to be worked on (something festivals request when submitting).
Unfortunately, a hard drive failure set us back quite a bit on post production, mostly in the audio department. Some of the soundtrack is temporary, more ADR needs to be done in some scenes, and existing audio is in the process of being refined with better plug-ins.
With that in mind, any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! We're continually working on the film and updating the cut posted here."The film is certainly more together than when I first wrote that message, but more work still needs to be done. I'm trying to not be so stuck in the forest when looking at it, so that I can find things in the edit that, when looking at the film as a whole, can be improved or don't make sense. I've caught plenty of strange editing choices that I've fixed so far, but I'm sure there's plenty more I'll find over the coming days and weeks.
ADR has been taking up a lot of our time as well. We're slowly getting better at it, but we also need to work on the audio mixing more so that the ADR lines fit into the mix properly.
A lot has happened, but the film is in a far better state than before we moved out here, and for that I'm excited.
Hope all is well,
Kevin Breisch

Super cool to see how this is coming along, Kevin! I look forward to announcing an impending screening here soon. And if the strike doesn’t end… I think you can dress as any character from Kevin’s awesome indie film for Halloween and not violate SAG guidelines.
MORE EDITOR SCOUTING:
Gina and Emmanuel have finished their shoot!
Hi everyone, Emmanuel and I just finished shooting our short film and we are currently looking for collaborators to support us in the post-production process. If you would like to join this project as an editor, sound designer or colorist I would love for you to reach out to me here: gina.maria.thumm@gmail.com. Excited to hear from you. - Gina & Emmanuel
And if you are interested in a burst of motivation to make a short, I highly recommend checking in with them about trying out the writing group from which this endeavor was born.
We aren’t done yet!
Hubert Kozak was put in touch with me by a mutual friend (yes a librarian) about the above event.
Jeff and Renee will be talking about Jeff’s new book, looking at the history of Asian Americans in film and looking at some of the recent film triumphs. I’m hoping that this will be a little celebration. The event is at our Buena Vista Branch Library which is in the heart of the Media District here in Burbank, just a few blocks from Disney and Warner Bros. It’s a free event, but we are asking people to register, so it would be helpful if you are able to post or send around the attached slide to also give people the following link, which will get them to the event detail and registration page on our library website https://burbank.libnet.info/event/9198056
Thanks for any help you might be able to give me in getting the word out!
Best,
Hubert
And I will certainly be posting about AWFF the Asian World Film Festival I did a bit of moderating for last year (was it a year?).
MOVIE REVIEW:
Don’t worry, I’m not going to actually do a review, rather a prediction about guaranteed best costume winner ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ — I predict the “killer” score by the too recently departed Robbie Robertson is so good and effective that it will become the new Zimmer drone in being borrowed and overused. But I really would not mind that. More importantly if you dig music or might be looking for some music, check out the updated site from newsletter alumni Leo Maymind: LINK
I’m truly sorry if I missed anything, but do feel free to check back for an update on screenings… if not assuming this strike wraps up, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Halloween and pleasant calm between SAG and IATSE strikes.
#IATSESTRONG
Too soon?
Take care, and THANKS FOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS THIS MONTH!!!!
